Potential, not much else
The good part is that the app does indeed do something no other music discovery app can do on iOS: semi-transparently sync your played music on the iOS music app. Unfortunately, it's only semi-transparently because it can only sync played music when you intentionally launch the Soundwave app. So, though it's undoubtedly ahead of otherwise similar apps (e.g. Soundtracking) where you must make an effort to post track by track while they're playing, it still only captures listening data of users who are routinely launching the app. Another issue is that it is (unsurprisingly) dependent upon accurate tagging for track recognition but (surprisingly) only transmits song name and artist, the album information is not part of the data used to recognized tracks. This leads to a fairly high percentage of incorrect identifications: live versions are attributed to studio albums (and vice versa), a track from a "Best Of" shows up as being from the original album (and vice versa), and tracks with similar names are attributed to the wrong version and album (e.g. the Love versions of Beatle's tunes). Further, since it handles bracketed and parenthesized parts of song titles inconsistently, it's not uncommon for songs to go unrecognized even when from reasonably major albums if their system fails to parse the tagging properly. Additionally, songs may be posted more than once for unknown reasons, show up in the feed out of order, etc.. Issues with accuracy of song tracking aside, the main issue is that, for now, it's unclear what the utility of the app is exactly. There's nowhere near enough interesting musicians or celebrities actually *using* it to be getting some sort of musical twitter feed that would interest users. Further, while I could see it potentially making a great Facebook-like feed among friends where we could see what everyone is listening to, currently "no one" is using it. As a "music discovery" app, what it's billed as, it's currently a fail. This is exacerbated by a general weakness of data tracking - last.fm could point you toward other users with similar listening habits, point you toward bands that correlated with heavily rotated artists in your own feed, could point out when artists you'd listened to released new music, etc.. All of that is missing here, and the profile created for you is little more than your top 20 songs and most recent plays The best effort Soundwave makes is the novel ability to see what's "trending" in any geographic location, which does provide a bit of entertainment even if it's unlikely to actually help you find new music you like. The app has potential, and a good deal of money behind it, so it could become something worth having but, for now, it's little more than a weak replacement for last.fm on iOS.

Interesting so far
I like it. The automatic sync to what your iPod is playing is great. The map feature is really cool. I almost never let anything record where I am, but it's just a nifty (optional!) feature. It must be a Facebook affiliated product as there is no Twitter or Tumblr integration. The devs should reconsider that. One of the easiest ways to get people to use it is to make it easy for people to find other users across different social media. As it stands, it is the users' responsibility to get others to use it and explain why. It would also be nice if you could collapse sync'd songs into a list and/or grid.

It's a one of a kind app! If you follow the right people it will be the most entertaining app on your phone!
