Was hoping for better
Sometimes it seems to work ok, other times the video is pixelated and/or choppy, or stops altogether while the audio continues. They need to take a lesson from TED --didn't have any problems there when Smithsonian videos were choking.

Still needs some serious work.
Still need serious improvement to bring this app into the 21st century. Irritating because videos start playing immediately upon selecting. There is no chance to decide if you want to watch based in content, running time or many other factor. Love the channel. Use the iPad app because Comcast near Chicago does not carry this in HD.

ONE OF MY FAVORITE SHOWS
I am Over The Air n cannot get this unless it is on Prime, Netflix or maybe PBS. The App I gave it a 3 because I wanted to see more but it cut me off and even exited the App??? But I Love Smithsonian Chanel.

Not Impressed
Trying to resume watching Boomtowners, which I started watching a few days ago. Not only can I not find anywhere to find the watchable video, it also doesn't show under Recently Watched. If a show can't be watched on the app, it should be listed as such.

Poor usability disappoints after previous app
This picture book app by Potion is a giant leap down from Smithsonian’s predecessor app from Mercury. The first step in usability is to understand the user, but someone must have neglected to tell Potion that the typical Smithsonian user knows how to read. The main video page is nothing but screen shots, sized (on an iPad mini) to be two and a half across. For many, these are useless: Is a picture of a field about corn? Iowa? No, the Dakotas. You have to start scrolling to trigger a popup caption, hoping the text doesn’t wash out against the background. Even then, it’s often not enough. A picture of a bird is describes as “Dancers on Fire”. Nature? Anthropology? Dance? Tapping on a particular video isn’t any help, as it starts to play without first showing the description. And perhaps anticipating that I may not actually want to watch the video I just tapped, the first piece of text to hit you after the title says to Swipe to the next video. You have to wait for it to actually start streaming before you get to read the description of what you may or may not want to see. The Find a Show page is somewhat better, using the categories similar to the previous app’s. But choosing to be fancy rather than informative, It only displays one item in full size text, the other three on the screen successively dimmer and smaller. The Create a Channel page is an example of unconstrained programmers let loose to create unusable glitter. The category list is overdone, with overlapping entries such as Animals and Creatures, America and Americana. Dragging an entry to the center highlights one random item, with other unreadable bubbles floating in orbit around it. Switching to lineup mode is better, particularly if you can hit the small “i” icon to popup info. But with random bugs, “Mighty Ships” appearing in my Animals lineup, and Elephants disappearing after I started watching and then returned to the lineup. Missing entirely from the app is a way to simply choose all available full episodes - my most used feature of the predecessor app. All in all, this is a sad replacement for an app that had been both engaging and easy to use, proving that all that glitters is not gold.

Need to be able to fast forward
I watched the first half hour of an episode that lasted an hour and a half. I closed the app planning to watch the rest later but had to start the video from the beginning! I should have been able to restart where I left off . . .
