These Guys Have Won Me Over
I previously reviewed this app as being OK, but nothing special. But I have to say that, over time, I have come to enjoy this – and their other app TitleFX – quite a bit. The design is clean, the tools are very well laid out, and the results are professional. I still have a preference for Snapseed as being The Gold Standard in photo editing, because of its use of clearly-defined modules, and because it's simply the most fun to use. But as time has gone by, I've come to see that PhotoToaster is a high-quality tool which is no slouch when it comes to getting excellent results and enjoying the process along the way. Although I had already purchased their upgrade pack, I'm happy to see this company is willing to avoid the trend of in-app purchases. This is something apps like Paper By 53 and Halftone 2 could learn a lesson from, because many people feel gouged by apps which end up being closer to 10 dollars than the typical 99 cents. So I hope their decision to have a single price for their app ends up being profitable for them in the long run. In terms of framing options, this app is superior to Snapseed, and you'll find yourself enjoying the fact that the filters are actually restrained and useful, instead of cheesey and oerblown. My chief criticism of the app before was that it was functional, but not fun. Yet, after digging deeper into what it can do, I find I kind of LIKE the fact that it is understated. The interface makes you feel that you're working with a tool that is serious, and not frivolous. And as you work through the various phases of completing your picture, you'll find that reaching the end was a process where the program never screamed, "Look at me!", but instead quietly helped you achieve your goal. So... I've now bumped my review up two stars. Is it perfect yet? No, they have a ways to go before they reach that status. (And yes, studying some of Snapseed's interface -- such as simply sliding your finger to the left or right to lower or increase the intensity of effects -- might be a good idea. But in the meantime, this is a program that you would do well to have in your arsenal. It's definitely worth the minor cost. (And then be sure to buy TitleFX, because it's currently the best titler out there. I've used the top 7 or 8 titler programs, and theirs beats them all in most, (though not all), categories.)
