Not prepared
You can't save The Plain Dealer by making me jump through hoops to open it. Three clicks, then it's unresponsive, glitchy and crashes. You should have just paid the developers of The New York Times app to develop yours. Lousy app. Good journalism.

Abysmal App / Constructive Suggestions
While I'm glad that the Plain Dealer is moving towards the future of electronic publishing, this transition to digital content appears to be amateurish. This app is not useable as it exists. Here's why: - Daily paper is a zoomable PDF like format that does not scale to small screens. - At other times it appears to be built with HTML frames. Who does that? - Navigation is abysmal. Here's how to improve: - Study successful news apps and create a similar format. (CNN, USA Today, Huffington Post, etc.). These competitors would be dead in the water if there content was formatted used what you have layed out for us electronically. - Do not reinvent the wheel - copy what works. Do not create some sort of AvantGo looking experience - for the love of god this isn't 1999, we don't have PocketPC's - no one wants to zoom in on PDF esque versions of a newspaper. - Hire an out of town design team to help you develop a top shelf UI. - Do some research and ask some of your technical users to preview your next generation initiatives and give you feedback. - Do A/B testing. - Reduce the number of clicks to get to content. - Don't create an app for multiple platforms until those on one platform think your awesome. - Don't think for a second that the app interface must be so simple and basic and generic just so it can work on multiple platforms. - Quadruple your budget for electronic editions. You're not buying time - you're investing in your own future. - Follow me AT unangst on twitter. Seriously, many of us could go on and would even be willing to help. - Profit

You can do better
Hard to navigate, and now fails to load after only a couple of days. Horrible!

I love this app
I do not really care for most of the newspaper apps but I love this one. It still gives the feeling of reading a paper edition, complete with the ads, while allowing you to have a more "modern" view of the article by using a two-finger tap. I hated the idea of losing my printed morning paper but this may make that bearable. Now, I need to figure out how to do the crossword, Sudoku and Jumble. Update - after using the app for some time now I find that it crashes for no reason. Not a significant problem since you can go right back to your previous position but irritating. I am downgrading my rating from 5 to 3 stars.

Poor user interface. Routinely crashes on an iPad 1. Very difficult to navigate especially when compared to most other eZines and online newspapers.
