It made an unusable and undeletable random times icon that is now taking up space and really annoys me.

Layout works on small devices not the iPad
The new layout works quite well on my 5s with one exception. The banner ad at the bottom tends to be very distracting. Depending on the ad, I've had to just close out and switch to WSJ or feedly. I know NYT and WSJ are old school but paid services with intrusive ads are just not going to fly. Make the banner close-able or use a temp interstitial instead. That rant done. On to the next... While the new layout works well on the smaller devices, it's a total wreck on the iPad. The articles and text look sparse. There are weird stray lines of text separated by large gaps of white space from their parent paragraph. The loss of one-page-at-a-time kills it. It seems like this time around the iPad app was an afterthought. Like the day before submitting they realized they also had to make a design for the iPad. The formatting doesn't work. It's like the iPhone blown up. Where the NYT iPad app used to be the best reading experience, it is now entry-level. Total bummer.

The update is not satisfactory. And newstand is the bane of my existence. That is all.

One Big Flaw...
When scrolling, if you touch a link by mistake it launches a new page. This was not the behavior of the old app and is very frustrating. Should revert back to old functionality when you had to long press on a link.

Still a good app, but not as good
Overall, I love the app, subscribe, and am reading articles on it all day. But in this version, they changed the way hyperlinks work so that if you are scrolling through an article and start your "swipe" gesture on a link, it will open it, even though it is clear that you didn't intend to open the link. Very annoying, especially since when you are scrolling while reading you are not looking at where your swipe gesture is starting. Hyperlinks should only be opened with a "tap". Others have complained about the ads, but I don't see any problem with them. I'm using an iPhone 5 and the ads only take up a tiny portion of the screen at the bottom or top... hardly noticeable while reading articles.
