Has a bug
This new version has a strange bug. It dumped an undeletable icon on my phone with the New York Times gothic T. It does nothing and all attempts to delete it failed. I deleted the app from my iPhone and reinstalled. Now the icon is gone from the Newstand and the strange icon is now the icon to launch the app. It appears the developers forgot to incorporate this new version into the Newstand. UPDATE: Updated my iPhone 4S to iOS 7.0.4 today. The large icon disappeared from my iPhone and reappeared in the newstand. Not sure if it will remain there at the next update but for now it appears to be to normal.

I like NYT & hate that it's a Newsstand app - I don't use Newsstand ever. Still waiting for readers' comments to be included-- but my main complaint is the multitude of ads ... in a paid subscription.

Bad management
Great content as you would expect, but too many ridiculous push messages. Very ineffective, I have now turned it off.

Screen reader, VoiceOver, not working properly
Before iOS 7 came out, the screen reader, voiceover, worked well. I could advance from paragraph to paragraph using standard commands for VoiceOver and the voiceover cursor would follow from one paragraph to the next. This let me follow along visually so I could see when it was reading the captions for photos and graphs and I could see those photos and graphs. However, since iOS 7 has come out the articles in the New York Times do not work properly when I attempt to read them using the screen reader. The headlines section works fine, but when I opened an article the screen reader will start with reading the body of the article. It skips the title, authors name, captions, etc. the body of the article starts playing but the screen does not change, so I can only see the first page while the article is reading 10,12, or 15 pages down. If the reading of the article gets interrupted, I have lost my place in the article. I can only hope that the New York Times will correct this problem so that the app will work like it did before iOS 7 came out.Before iOS 7 came out, the screen reader, voiceover, worked well. AT LAST it works well
Latest update, Nov 2013, no longer crashes nor loses my section preferences. Would have given it 5 stars but (1) it still refuses to delete several sections I don't want and (2) I STILL am STARTLED by random unexpected full-page ads. I keep a list of their sponsors - e.g., I will NEVER buy Celine products. now, IN BETWEEN CRASHES every 10 minutes, it randomizes and deletes my selected sections to read. It constantly puts back into SAVED the articles I had UNsaved AND loses all my settings and list/order of sections. And, for a paid subscription, it forces me to be startled by unexpected full-page ads.

Sections reorder does not work
Every time I try to reorder the sections and list them in the order that I prefer to read them it jumps back to whatever the app wants. It forces me to have to scroll through sections I'm not interested in. Very frustrating!
